I have a Verlinden, several Royal Models, and who knows what else, frets of photo etch tools. i'd like to give them a little more presence.

Q: would leaving them on the frets and building up a couple of paint layers be "the way" to go in an attempt to make them a bit less two-dimensional?

I like to use thin coats of CA, building up to the thickness and texture I want. Works better and faster with an accelerator, at least for larger items. Very small (as in tiny) PE parts can actually melt because of high temps generated with an accelerator. So I only use it on larger brass PE.

Some gloss enamels have a tendency to shrink away from open surfaces and hide in the corners, it also shrinks away from edges. Humbrols gloss white or ebony for instance.
Painting a tool handle should cause the paint to huddle along the centerline, gradually rounding off the flat PE to something almost 3D
