I just read a biography of Dr. Seuss, who joined the US Army even though he was too old, and they placed him among US was propaganda makers along with people like Frank Capra and other major people in the film and advertising industry. It seems they were all high-ranking officers.

No real boot camp. Just an orientation. The naval officer who was Eisenhower's assistant was a radio executive, given the rank of Commander as parity with his civilian position, and sent to war. He kept Eisenhower's journal and stated he didn't help much other than to set up communications equipment, especially in North Africa, where he felt he actually contributed something. He had a conversation with a British officer who was astonished that they would give such a high rank to a civilian with no experience. He was later promoted to captain.
