I was 17 and turned 18 in the fourth week of basic training at Fort Knox. I had KP that day — spent the whole day washing pots and pans. When I reported back to the platoon that evening, I was summoned by the drill sergeant — I thought he had found out about my birthday and was going to bring some smoke on me. Turned out he just wanted to tell me that I was the new platoon guide-on bearer, a position that had a few minor perks ... like moving out of the bay and into a room with the squad leaders.

Eighteen when I (first) went in. The 'push' to do so was because I held a 'winning' Lottery number. (And we're not talking about a big money lottery here.)

As a matter of fact, it was 32 years ago next week...

I started military training when I was 10. It was compulsory. Nope, it wasn't much of a hard training, it was somekind of a community service. Since then, I continued on until our ROTC. I finished my military training just this April. Total training years is 8. I'm officially a reserve now.

I was commissioned just before my 23d birthday as a Second Lieutenant. I was a 4-year ROTC cadet up until then. I took a year off between high school and college to load trucks (and realize I needed to go to school!)

I was 17 when my mother signed my papers for the Delayed Entry Program in 1989. It was in October of my senior year of high school. I turned 18 in basic at Ft. "Lost In The Woods" Leonardwood. I had JROTC in high school, so I went in as a E-3/PFC. Just turned 18 and in charge of guys older than me. Did 6 years active duty and now I am on my 6th year in the National Guard. I even just re-enlisted for another 6 years. That will put me at 18 years in the service total. But now that I work as a state employee for the National Guard, I have to stay in the Guard till I want to retire or leave the state job. So I will probably end up putting in about 30 years in the service.

I enlisted at 17, turned 18 the day I reported to Basic Training at Ft. "Lost in the Woods" (Leonard Wood). Took two breaks in service and I'm now on the downhill side of 20... finally!
