Hobby Annex Local Hobby Shop

Hobby Annex – Richardson, TX
Proprietor: Keith Magee (KFMagee on Armorama)

Nestled in a corner spot of the shopping center located on the southeast corner of Preston and Campbell Roads in North Dallas, is the Dallas-Fort Worth areas newest hobby shop, Hobby Annex. The store has been designed to offer a unique experience for the modeler, why don’t we take a look at what sets Hobby Annex apart from the other LHS’s in the area.

While the store readies itself for its official Grand Opening on October 15, the stores owner and operator, Armorama’s own Keith Magee (KFMagee) is busy putting the final touches on what will be a true modeler’s hobby shop. You’ll find plenty o’ plastic and all the tools you’ll need to build, weather and display your models in impressive fashion. So if you find yourself in the area, or need an excuse to come visit the great state of Texas, ya’ll come and visit a while.

Keith’s desire was to open a hobby shop that catered specifically to the modeler, unlike some of the other hobby shops that have models in the store as almost an afterthought. This is a modeler’s hobby shop through and through, once you step inside you see it immediately.

Stocked on the shelves you’ll see a grand assortment of armor, fixed wing and helo’s, surface warships, modern era and WWII submarines, figures and diorama accessories and kits. Aftermarket items are aplenty as well for the detail minded including turned barrels, interior kits, zimmerit, photo-etched items both plain brass and pre-painted (which I must say after viewing them, are a tremendous buy that will only get more popular I think). Hobby Annex carries kits in the above mentioned genres from the following kit makers:
Tamiya     DML         AFV Club     Academy
Zvezda     Trumpeter     Verlinden     Airfix
Eduard     Platoon     Warriors     Italeri
AMT          Revell     Testors     CMK
Fujimi        Andrea Miniatures     Pegaso

To aid in your kit building, Hobby Annex also offers Squadron tools, Tamiya and Testors. Both bottle and rattle can paints from several different manufacturers such as Tamiya, Testors and Andrea Colors. Airbrush parts and kits by Badger, Aztec and Paasche as well as compressors and a nice assortment of brushes for detail work. There are also diorama accessories from Scale Military, Custom Dioramics, Hansa Systems, Woodland Scenics and Verlinden and ‘finishers’ for your kits such as Rustall, MIG Pigments and Tamiya weathering kits and sticks.

Need some reference material before you start working on your next show winner? Head on over to the magazine/book rack and you can peruse the printed works. Hobby Annex is already stocking the latest magazines from Military Miniatures, Model Military International, Military In Scale and Tamiya Model Magazine to name a few. You’ll find Squadron/Signal Publication books along with various other ‘how to’ guides from Osprey and others are available to help build your personal library as well. Need some motivation to build, check out the ever growing collection of dioramas on display built by your fellow modelers.

Keith’s been working hard at getting everything into place to give his customers, just about everything you could need in a one stop shopping experience. There are some great ‘value added’ services that you won’t find anywhere else, such as the shops own workbench in the back complete with tools for free use during your visit. A spray booth with compressor and your choice of single or dual action airbrush to use at no charge that the staff will assist you with if needed.

In the future, Keith will be making available his own personal reference library along with a comfortable couch for those extended reading sessions. A classroom/club meeting area for local club use (with discounts for club members!) and the most important item, the never ending coffee pot! Soon Hobby Annex will also be online, open for mail order business. Keith will be offering a discount to all Armorama members with a very special 25% discount exclusively for A-Guard members. Add to all of this a professional and knowledgeable staff of fellow modelers ready to assist you in all of your hobby needs and you have a great place to not only pick up the latest kits but to kick back and enjoy the fellowship of like minded hobbyists.

Congratulations on opening your shop Keith. It looks very similar (and seems to have a very similar business philosophy) to our local, successful, hobby shop: Hobby Island. I look forward to visiting next time I make it to Dallas. Keith

Congratulations Keith! I hope you do really well. I can see that I'd be dropping a lot of cash if I were in the area. Great work!

Thanks fellas - lots of fun so far.... and business is picking up as more people hear about us. We are trying to be "price competitive" with the Net, while still providing personalized service. Thje strange thing is we are STILL waiting on stuff to arrive (ie, Plastruct Display, etc.) that we ordered 8 weeks ago. All I can tell everyone is two things: - if you can't find it, give us a call, and we'll give you a great price (972-380-8900) - support your local hobby shop... paying an extra dollar or two makes all the difference to us. Unlike the "net only" shops, we try to have everything on hand and in stock, so that we have it when you want it... and of course that means we have to gamble a bit on what the market will be looking for. Most stores that I know that have closed said it was because regular customers were looking but not buying anymore. So far, that hasn't been my problem - hope it stays that way! Keith Keith

Eight weeks is too long for! Sorry, I'll complain on your behalf. I hope you are at least getting the product to sell even if it's not in thier display. I hope the Texas spirit keeps things positive for you.

That HAS to be THE best looking and cleanest looking LHS that I have EVER seen Keith. Well done and the very best of luck for the future. I hope you'll have early mornings and late nights because of good business. Any plans to open the same kind of shop here in Glasgow? Pllleeeaaassseee........ :-) :-) :-) :-) If you sell on the net I'll give you a try as well matey. I'll give it out of 10....
