hah, that's an easy one for Mr. Airborne EAGLE.....

the best war movie in my humble opinion is A Bridge Too Far.

I already had the video, but I've seen it so many times it almost started to fall apart.... Now I bought the DvD...... Each time I night-fed my little girl last couple of weeks I watched a part of the movie...over and over and over and......over.

I've seen it 8 times last couple of weeks searching for some nice dio's scenes to dig into.... got some neat ideas, the only thing I need right now is.......time to build it....

Lawrence of Arabia

Just got this on DVD last week for $10. This is a great movie. It's one of those movies you can see over and over again.

Good the Bad and the Ugly.

Hey, it takes place during the Civil War!

I love the music.

Eastwood at his best!

Does anyone remember The Devil's Brigade? I don't know of anything else that even mentions the First Special Service Force, and it has Bagpipes!!!!! Not accurate on the American side, but the Canadians are.
Another is Saving Private Ryan. You can say what you will about nitpicking accuracy, but it was close enough to pass muster with my Dad who came across the beach at Pusan back in The Forgotten War

Blue--I recently read a superb book on the 1st Special Service Force. You might want to pick it up. It is an Oral History and a very readable book. The movie is pretty well done. I wish they would have shown what those guys did during the invasion of Kiska in Alaska. An amazing part of the total story. History Channel also had a magnificent film on the creation and employment of the brigade.

DJ,
Thanks, I'll keep an eye open for Darby's Rangers. I do remember watching "DI" years ago. Very enjoyable. Isn't that the movie where a recruit squashed a mosquito and Webb's character had the whole platoon searching for the corpse. Very funny!

Craig--a sand flea was squashed by a wavering recruit to the dismay of his fellow recruits...good flick. Blockbuster usually carries it.

Great stuff, Easy. Glad to see there's someone else that has heard of the show.
I like the smell of gunpowder (at least more than there was in the 100 Years' War) so I haven't read some of Cornwell's other books. I did read the three or four books of his Starbuck Chronicles, about a soldier in the Confederate Army during the US Civil War. It was really good and I wish Cornwell would continue the series.
I taped every episode of Sharpe too, so I can watch it whenever I want :-)

My father fought with the 45th infrantry div. in France and Germany and he once told me that Hell is for Heros was the most realistic WWII movie he had ever seen. I love the movie but now that dad is gone I have a hard time watching it but I would still say it is my favorite and The Longest day second and Cross of Iron Third.

How about Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers for renewing interest in the public for WW2.

I have to go with Das Boot or Stalingrad myself.

Lord, am I glad someone mentioned "Platoon." I hate that film. It is a travesty that smears every Soldier who served in Vietnam. It perpetuates this myth of "I was there, so feel sorry for me." Horrible misrepresentation of a platoon in combat. Several examples for you to consider. You'd be certifiably insane to put a new guy on point. Are you crazy? The lives of every guy in that platoon depend on the eyes and ears of the point man. He better be the most experienced and smart guy in the platoon. Yelling and screaming in the jungle? Smoking? You better be a s quiet as a mouse in church. See the Anderson Platoon. Those Soldiers know how to move and shoot in triple canopy jungle. There are so many false perceptions portrayed by that film as to render it useless. That's my two cents.

I saw another great war picture recently that I hadn't seen since I was a kid.
"King Rat" starring George Segal. POW's in a Japanese camp. He's the schemer that runs the camp black market. I think it's a better version of this kind of character than William Holden's version in "Stalag 13" (another great movie).
Excellent movie! Highly recommended.

Well, I did not intend to attack someone's enjoyment of fiction. However, this particular waste of time enhances the perception that Soldiers in Vietnam did nothing but do drugs, burn villages, submit to incompetent leaders, and rape women. Bet everyone of those things happened, however, the vast bulk of Soldiers served their Nation and themselves honorably and have nothing to be ashamed of.
It's my hot button issue.............. sorry.

Hey man no sweat I was only joking.Hence the "lol" and "j/k".I understand completly about your hot button on the misconceptions the movie represents. It gives a bad image to good soldiers.Exact same thing actually happened during the war.

Well, having served several enlistments, I can assure you that there are plenty of times that I wondered, "Just exactly why are we doing this?" About small things, not the big picture. Things like having training exercises, but not getting into the chem suits, because that was too much work. But then when we needed the chem suits, no one could use them because we didn't train with them. Just the goofy stuff that we used to have to do that seemed to make sense to no one. Sorry if I offended you by my light hearted attitude about the "life" that I dedicated a good portion of my life to. Believe me, I loved almost every minute of it, and wouldn't trade it for anything.

after thinking about it, insanity was very much the wrong word. My apologies.
