As the box says, this is Hobby Boss' kit of the french battleship "Dunkerque". I have picked this as away of getting back into ship building. Following Simon's excellent Danton, this will be out of the box, mainly to keep it straightforward and also because I haven't seen any aftermarket, and if there is, don't tell me

The first peak in the box is the hull. Complete delight, it's in one piece. Maybe not so good for the waterliners but a very nice change from trying to get two 400mm pieces of styrene joined.

The moulding looks great, with subtle "eyebrows" over the portholes and fine lines the length of the hull.

All of that should look pretty good under a wash.
The deck detail is also very good and the fit to hull excellent.

Happy with the initial viewing I got the hull painted along with a bootstrap.

And finished in Atlantic Grey

Detailed the props and screws

I feel the vibe coming back and the weather is miserable here this weekend so might get the deck painted yet.

cheers
Michael

Very nice paint work on the hull. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the ship comes out.

Hi Tim,
Yes I did! I just wanted to get started on what I hope will be a pretty straightforward build. Now that I forsworn the aftermarket for this, though there is some etch in the box, I hope it will be plain sailing.

Thanks Todd, I think with a one piece hull and three for the deck initial progress will be rapid. After that, it all depends.

Hi Simon,
Yes I saw you had picked it up with Danton when I posted in the tidal delivery section.
It seems very similar to Rodney and Nelson with the big guns up front so very long fore deck gives it a sleek look.

Well as forecast the weather was miserable this weekend (if you're as golfer) but it was good for modelling.
While waiting for various coats of paint to dry on the deck I started with Steps 5 and 6 of the instructions. HobbyBoss have an interesting approach to assembly. Build all the bits now that you won't need till the end of the build. This piece is added at Step 24. (25 is the final step)
The catapult is actually a nice piece of etch. (The photetch in this kit is not vast but is very well done)

The decking is three different Tamiya colours, Deck Tan, Desert Yellow and White sprayed in different ways to give a blended look.
The forepeak is Navy Blue.

cheers

Hi Dave,
I think you definitely add this to the stash. It would be relief from the Japanese fleet you are assembling

thanks

Even if they hadn't been the next steps in the instructions I would have built these. Always love doing the big guns.

The PE railing is a bit solid, more barnyard than ship

The only value add here was to drill out the end of the barrels

Looking very menacing Michael

Am giving serious consideration to buying Hobby Boss' HMS Lord Nelson, thus I am watching your build with an extra keen eye.

No pressure though

What Russ said,

Those turrets do look a like you would not want to be on the business end of them.

Lord Neslon is on my hit list too, hope it is as good as their Danton.

Thanks Russ, they do look the part.
I thought about Lord Nelson but a french ship appealed since I haven't done one and I was born there so always a soft spot for the tricolor.

Well it was the Danton that got me on to this. I am impressed with the kit as it is in the box so I think their others should be on a par. Enough etch to keep it interesting but you can see where a full set would allow you go that extra step.

It was the production line in operation today. The rest of the guns built
The secondary, quad 5", which are all at the rear

The two twin 5" which are amidships

Four twin 1.5"

The detail gets a bit soft as you get smaller. I think brass barrels would help here and finally, the french equivalent of the quad vickers .50cal, a quad hotchkiss 13mm anti-aircraft set.
There are 11 of them

And the searchlights which had a prominent mould line across the face.

The macro lenses shows a bit more work required on this one

cheers

Hi Michael!

Sorry for my late joining here, but I'm in and following for sure!!

Very interesting ship, the french had a very special and distinctive way of building their four modern battleships.
The quality of the kit looks really good, so this seems a fund build. Sometimes you just need something that builds fast and clean and you can see results. I'm struggling a little with my Hood these times...
But besides that, you are doing a splendid job on the kit.

Cheers,
Jan
