If I remember my history well, the design dates back to 1936, and production started before the war.
The beetle was used during the war, I think even in pickup and ambulance versions.
I think that they were even seen in north africa.

as far as i know rhe beetle prototype began in 1931and developed into the familier beetle design under Ferdinand Porsche, his main backer was Adolf Hitler, who wanted a peoples
car.In 1938 thr Wolfsburg plant was built, and during the war years the beetle chassis was
used for the schimmwagen, and theKubelwagen.I think Porsche went on to design tank
turrets,engines for the same etc.
Cheers

It was used on airfields also, probably to bring aircrews to dispersed aircraft...
I used to live close to an airfield that was used by the german for the defense of Paris, and when
you see how far the planes were hidden ! Man, you understand why a car was needed to go to your
plane.

CMK makes several different versions of war time VW's. They were in service early enough for use in the desert. Apparently, the Japanese ambassador in Berlin had one!

My daughter has one kit to build and I have an ambulance/postal version.

I know Squadron Shop carries them.
