There's another unique story that does not gte much if any press the Battle of Leyete Gulf. Interesting subject especially given the marvels of computer enhanced photography. I almost cry in frustration over the wasted effort making the movie "Peral Harbor." What a disgrace and waste of talent and time.

Thats HollyWood for you DJ.All that movie was was a korny love story that really didnt make any sense that was staged during that time.
Things like Ben Affleck's character asking to go fight for the Brits never happened in real life and a P-40 being chased by a Zero through the hangers is totally unreal. It would have been really nice to see the guys who got up in the air in those P-36s instead of the P-40s.

P-36! Causes me to reflect that I spoke to Jay in the discussion on the use of the Bombs against Japan and remarked that history makes sense to me when I apply it to current events. Unfortunately, Jim was set upon by irresistible forces at the time to end that productive discussion forum. If we discuss the effects of outmoded equipment (P-36, Brewster Buffalo, Devastator, etc), it becomes somewhat more meaningful if we connect it to the present. I offer as an illustration, the M1 Abrams. Should it stay in the inventory or go into oblvion. But, alas, that soap box is temporarily gone.

PS--I am trying to get a ground swell going to reinstate the current forum which disappeared during my unforeseen absence in January. Appreciate any input you folks might supply.

I dunno if thats a good idea DJ.The reason Jim took it down was because things got waayyy too over-heated in there and Im afraid it would happen again.I would know cause I am partly responsible for debates in there that shouldnt have come up.But in any case its an idea.

Controlling the normal heated discussions to drive home a point are what we have moderators to monitor. I wish other duties had not forced me to be away during this critical period. I am all for resuming the forum. It was a useful device for gathering and sharing ideas and information.

I would love to see a movie made about American tankers--from any period. WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam. Whatever. Something like The Beast, without the Russians.

Too many times, moviemakers just use tanks as moveable props and don't focus on the men inside.

I'd love to see a movie version of Ralph Zumbro's Tank Sergeant. We've seen plenty of Vietnam "grunt films". It's time to see some tankers.

I heard Zumbro's book received favorable reviews. Never read it. Do you recall what unit he discussed. I understand it is his personal recollections.
thanks

IMO, it's an outstanding book. His writing style is a bit "folksy" at times, but the whole of the book is excellent.

He served with A-1/69 Armor.

Found this cool link about him: http://www.geocities.com/futuretanks/right.htm

You can even e-mail him.

For Vietnam:
-Maybe something with a SOG team
-A more realistic movie about Air America

-Something from the view of spec. ops in Just 'Cause

-A fictional movie of a Delta team scud-hunting in Desert Storm

-Something form Operation Enduring Freedom?

-A movie from the view of the Red Baron in WWI, right up until his last flight?

Some great recommendations. The Blue Max attempted to cover WW I avaiation. Failed miserably. And the one on Air America was dumber than dirt. Revisions of those would be great.

Amigo--if I can get some assistance, we can petition Jim to restart what to me was a productive interplay of ideas and concepts. A few folks who participated have asked me off line to re initiate it.
Let me know who want to join in.
thanks
