Its not what we would expect coming from a more "military" history forum but here it is DJ.

Zach--thanks. Kinda like "Zulu." Add it to the list. We had one entry that spoke to the German WW I efforts in East Africa. This just enhances the list.

Breaking away from the World War 2 theme:

Waterloo.
Leipzig (redo War & Peace).
The 30-years war.
A good version of the time around the fall of the Roman Empire (Catalaunian fields).

If you like navel battles: the 2nd Anglo-Dutch naval war (which had the Four Days Battle, and the raid upon Chatham), or the 3rd, which saw the Dutch Republic facing England, France and the neighbouring German states. This, and especially the naval battles, was a desperate struggle for survival.

There have actually been a few movies made on the Mahdist Revolution, including The Four Feathers (several times, I think) and Khartoum. I haven't actually seen any of them, though, so I don't know how good they are.

Nic--too bad about the latest Four Feathers attempt. Great story. I thought the film was okay and would like to add it to my collection of films.

I would love to see a good Movie about the 2nd Battle of Ypres. The Germans attacking the Canadian line using the first major gas attack of the war. That could be a great movie.

That's what I was gonna suggest. I would also like to see something done on the first use of tanks in WWI. The first use of two terror weapons.....Chemical warfare and armored warfare.

Dutchbird, Waterloo from a dutch point of view would be fascinating the only question would be who would play the young frog? I personally would go for a serious movie treatment of Bull Run, that would be a real stormer. failing that, the peninsular war in 10 movies.... Jim

Jimbrae,

you mean who would play William ? IMHO they should if possible go the same way they did with "Longest Day" and "A bridge too far". So let the roles be played by nationals... IMHO that adds a lot.. The French do have a few great actors out there (say Jean Reno, and Gerard Depardieu (i you have a chance, whatch him play in the "Le comte de Monte Cristo mini-series). So undoubtedly do the Germans and the English, and there are a few promising Dutch actors.

By the way, according to Wellington, he was quite positive about him, supposedly. He said something like "William is quite gifted/capable, only inexperienced".

A movie abou the US Civil War could also be good (it is an area of interest for me). Want to make a tour along a number of battlefields one day (I have visited Gettysburg, Frederickburg and Spottsylvania CH so far), like Antietam, Bull Run, Shiloh, Richmond and Petersburg, Chickamauga and Chattanooga, Ft. Donelson and possibly Vicksburg.. the civil war titles of the Osprey campaign series are on the top of my wishlist for that particular series.

210Cav,

one movie, Glory, and one drama-series, North and South that I know of... though none of them (especially N&S) was about a particular battle in the Civil War.

Dutchbird,

Off topic, but I have been to Gettsyburg and Antietam. Antietam is almost as well preserved as Gettysburg. A real must see. And, while your in the area hit the National Ordinance Museum at Aberdeen. No, I don't work for the Maryland tourism board... :-)

i personally would like to see a band of brothers style mini series about either the british 7th armoured division and the parachute regiment.

for the desert rats they could do its formation, north africa, normandy and the pursuit to the rhine

the paras could cover thier formation, crete, normandy ( pegasus bridge ), and arnhem alone would need four hours at least!

DJ:
It really isn't a movie, but have you seen the Ken Burns series on the Civil War. It is a 10 hour documentary that gives you info that will leave you scratching your head wondering how and where he got all this great stuff. Also if you like reading Shelby Foote has that three book series out that dives way down into the conflict. I have both and can say if you are a Civil War Nut like me they are a must.
Also Foote is one of the people that gave Burns the info for the series and his interviews go right along with his books It is really great stuff.
Keeping with the question of the thread. I would like to see a movie of the Pacific Campaign made in the tradition of Band Of Brothers. I bet Speilberg and Hanks would do an outstanding job with it. Maybe they could call it "Uncommon Valor" or something along those lines. Just my two cent though.

My Friend-- I am a big fan of Burns and Foote. Also, Steve Sears is a compelling Civil War author. I can think of Glory and Gettysburg then a host of associated films (They Died With Their Boots On comes to mind), it seems to me there is a lack of authoritative Civil War movies. As suggested Antietam would be interesting, but one on Antietam would probably be as confusing as the actual battle. What a bad day for the Union! Wow. Regardless, if you went to the Pacific theater for a movie focus, I'd venture that one made about Tarawa would have people gulping and wondering "how did those guys overcome that?"
Amazing story of courage.

Come on, there are no more votes for the Battle of Berlin?
Think about it, desperation, "treason", spying, lying, suicide, heroism,... so many good elements of a captivating story.

I seem to remember a couple about the war in the air over Korea. One was about blowing some bridges, I think. Can't remember any names.

Nic---I think you are referring to the Mitchner book and subsequent film with William Holden "Bridges of Toko-Ri." That's three Korean war films. Anybody have others?

There was one called Targer Zero (I think) It was about a group of G.I.'s that teamed up with a British tank They also had a female U.N. observer with them I think it had Charles Bronson in it I don't think it's out on video

Something to do with the following.

Night Air war over Europe.

Nightfighters in the Pacific (p-61's mostly)

Or something to do with the Hanoi Hilton. The idea came to me while I was sitting in school spacing out in class. The woman would just get the telegram that her husband was shot down over N. Vietnam. The woman could be Julianne Moore. What better actress than her?!

Now there is a unique subject--- the P-61! I wonder if outside the Air Museum in Dayton there are any available let alone flyable. Interesting model.

The Korean War movie Target Zero has, as I recall, Rober Mitchum in the lead and some has been actress as the hand wringing teary eyed UN observer.

There actually was a movie called The Hanoi Hilton. It starred Michael Moriarty from the old Law and Order shows.

Here are four more movies about Korea. There is another air war movie, I think it's called The Hunters, I can't remember the main star but a young Robert Wagner was the second lead. They flew F-86s and, as I recall, got shot down behind enemy lines. Another air war film was The McConnell story, starring Alan Ladd. One movie that touched on the Korean War was The Great Imposter. Tony Curtis starred as a guy who impersonated many people, including a RCN Surgeon Lieutenant; excuse me "Leftenant." He performs bravely on a Canadian destroyer. Finally there is Battle Circus. This is a pre-M.A.S.H. story of a U.S. Army surgical hospital. It stars Humphrey Bogart and June Allison.

Back to the war movie I’d like to see I would love to see a really good remake of Sink the Bismarck with modern computer aided animation. I would also like to see a movie about the gallant action of Taffy Three in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
